Quinn Hughes has entered the Philadelphia conversation, with Rick Tocchet's Flyers emerging as a possible destination for the star defenseman.

The connection comes from Kevin Kurz, who identified Hughes when discussing major NHL names Philadelphia could realistically pursue over the next 12 months.

Hughes remains without a contract extension in Minnesota, leaving his long-term future open and giving teams around the league a reason to monitor the situation.

“In the short term, I would absolutely pay attention to what's happening with Quinn Hughes,” Kurz wrote.

Philadelphia carries an obvious connection. Hughes played under Tocchet in Vancouver, giving the Flyers head coach first-hand knowledge of what the defenseman can bring from the blue line.

There's another tie inside the locker room. Hughes is close with Trevor Zegras, adding a personal connection to a destination that would already offer familiarity behind the bench.

The Flyers also reportedly showed interest in Hughes before Vancouver sent him to Minnesota, though Philadelphia was not considered a trade option for the Canucks at the time.

Philadelphia could have a real opening

That history matters because Philadelphia has shown a willingness to chase elite talent rather than simply wait for its young core to develop.

Any pursuit of Hughes would come with a major condition. Philadelphia would likely need assurances on a new contract before surrendering the kind of assets required to bring him in.

Kurz raised the possibility of a 3-year extension, a structure that could eventually line Hughes up with brother Jack Hughes when the New Jersey Devils star reaches his own unrestricted free-agent window.

For the Flyers, that type of deal could provide immediate star power on the blue line while leaving future flexibility intact.

Philadelphia has been connected to other major names, but several paths have become less realistic. That only makes the Hughes situation more interesting if Minnesota can't secure his signature.

Nothing guarantees a move. But with no extension in place, Tocchet behind Philadelphia's bench and an established relationship already there, the Flyers have enough connections to make this one worth watching.
