Luke Evangelista is gone, and Andrew Brunette now has a younger opening in Nashville's forward group after a trade that deserves far more attention.
The Predators sent Evangelista to the New Jersey Devils for a conditional 2028 first-round pick originally belonging to Colorado and New Jersey's 2028 second-round selection.
That return is what makes this one of the most underrated trades of the summer. Nashville moved a good young winger, but landed two premium draft assets without taking another contract back.
Evangelista is only 24 and is coming off his best NHL season, producing 56 points in 81 games. New Jersey is betting that production keeps climbing.
The Predators are betting on something different: flexibility. Moving Evangelista clears his $3 million cap hit while opening another spot for a younger winger to push into Brunette's lineup.
There's also protection attached to the biggest piece. If Colorado's 2028 first-round pick lands in the top 10 under the outlined conditions, Nashville would receive Colorado's 2029 first-rounder instead.
Nashville quietly turned one asset into two
That's where the deal gets interesting. Evangelista isn't a fading player Nashville needed to dump. He's a young forward whose value was high after registering a career-best 44 assists.
Selling from that position gave the Predators a first-round asset, another second-round pick and additional breathing room without touching the core of the roster.
New Jersey has plenty to like. Evangelista brings a controlled, skilled offensive game to Sheldon Keefe's forward group and gives the Devils another option who can push for top-six minutes.
But the Devils also paid for that upside. Nashville didn't settle for a mid-round pick or a reclamation project. The Predators secured draft capital that can later become prospects or trade ammunition.
That's why this transaction could age well even before either selection is made. Barry Trotz now has more options for the next move, whether Nashville uses those picks at the draft or packages them elsewhere.
Big-name trades usually dominate the summer conversation. This one doesn't carry that kind of star power, but the Predators turned a valuable young winger into multiple future assets while creating immediate roster and cap flexibility.
That combination makes the Evangelista trade easy to overlook now and potentially impossible to ignore later.
