Brett Peterson is the one known name tied to Detroit's GM search as Todd McLellan waits for clarity above the Red Wings bench.
Elliotte Friedman revealed on 32 Thoughts that Detroit has potentially held discussions with Peterson, the Florida Panthers assistant general manager.
That distinction matters. Other executives may eventually surface, but Peterson is the only candidate currently linked to actual conversations with the Red Wings.
It immediately makes him the name to watch as Detroit searches for the executive who will determine where this roster goes next.
Peterson has been with Florida since the 2020-21 season, working inside a Panthers front office that has become one of the league's most successful operations.
He has also served twice as Team USA's general manager at the World Championship, giving him experience making personnel decisions beyond his assistant GM duties.
