Connor Hellebuyck has put Scott Arniel and the Winnipeg Jets in a difficult spot before training camp even opens.
Hellebuyck's trade request has shifted Winnipeg's offseason from roster preparation to a franchise-level decision involving one of hockey's biggest names.
Former NHL goaltender Martin Biron believes the Jets should demand a massive return: a first-round pick, a high-end prospect and two impact players.
That price reflects what Winnipeg would be giving up. Hellebuyck carries an $8,500,000 cap hit, placing him fourth among NHL goaltenders.
The complication is leverage. Hellebuyck still holds major control over his destination through his no-movement protection, narrowing the path available to general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff.

And Cheveldayoff can't simply focus on maximizing the return. Winnipeg also has to determine what its crease looks like after a deal.
Jets face a second question in the crease
Biron raised another issue by questioning whether Stuart Skinner should automatically become Winnipeg's long-term answer if Hellebuyck leaves.
That creates pressure on two fronts. The Jets need enough talent back to justify moving Hellebuyck while potentially searching for another NHL goaltender at the same time.
Skinner gives Winnipeg an established option, but Biron's comments suggest the organization shouldn't treat the position as settled simply because another starter is already available.
For Arniel, the uncertainty reaches directly into the locker room. A team preparing for camp could instead arrive with its most important position still surrounded by trade questions.
Hellebuyck's $8,500,000 contract also makes this more than a simple hockey trade. Any interested club has to absorb an elite-level salary while satisfying Winnipeg's asking price.
That is why Cheveldayoff's next move carries so much weight. Accept too little and the Jets lose leverage; hold too firmly and the situation can follow them directly into camp.
Hellebuyck has already forced Winnipeg into decision mode. Biron's proposed return shows just how expensive the Jets may believe that decision needs to be.
