But contract negotiations aren't decided by popularity alone. Montreal also has to consider roster flexibility, future cap commitments and whether another move could reshape the lineup.
Stu Cowan has raised the possibility that Montreal could still explore a trade involving its unsigned restricted free agents. That keeps another path open if talks fail to move.

Nothing in Bartlett's latest stance confirms a breakup between Xhekaj and Montreal. But compared with his earlier optimism, refusing to discuss negotiations sends a much colder message.
