Schneider could become the centerpiece of that type of hockey trade. His profile gives New York more leverage than a package built only around draft picks.
But Sullivan would still lose a dependable option from the blue line. Any deal must leave the Rangers comfortable with their remaining pairings and injury protection.
The timing may depend on training camp. If another defenseman earns a larger role, management could become more aggressive in conversations involving Schneider.
New York also can't force the move. Trading a young defenseman simply because the roster has depth would risk creating a new weakness while trying to solve another.
Mercogliano's report suggests the Rangers see a path, not a completed plan. Schneider is the asset who could open discussions with teams unwilling to move a meaningful forward for futures alone.
The pressure now shifts toward the return. New York needs scoring, but the forward coming back must change the top six enough to justify surrendering Schneider.
