Alex DeBrincat's future under Todd McLellan suddenly looks far more secure than many Detroit Red Wings fans expected.
Trade speculation felt inevitable after Patrick Kane left Detroit and reports surfaced that Dylan Larkin had requested a move. DeBrincat had just watched two major pieces of his Detroit circle disappear.
Kane's departure carried extra weight. He wasn't simply another top-six winger beside DeBrincat. The two were close friends who had already built chemistry together before reuniting with the Red Wings.
That reunion gave DeBrincat another reason to feel settled. Once Kane moved on, questions immediately followed about whether Detroit still offered the situation DeBrincat wanted.
The Larkin development only increased the uncertainty. Losing the captain would reshape the locker room, the leadership group and the direction of Steve Yzerman's roster.
A report relayed by Bob Duff has now pushed the conversation in the opposite direction. Those close to DeBrincat reportedly believe he treasures having his family together in Michigan.

That matters more than any summer trade-board speculation. DeBrincat likes Detroit, Michigan is home, and returning to the area reportedly meant the world to him.
This doesn't read like a player preparing to force his way out. It reads like someone whose connection to the city extends beyond linemates, special-teams deployment or the latest roster change.
Nothing is official until the Red Wings or DeBrincat address the situation directly. But this is the strongest indication yet that a trade isn't where the relationship is headed.
Detroit also has little reason to rush into moving a proven scoring winger. With Kane gone and Larkin's future questioned, removing DeBrincat would create another major opening in the top six.
McLellan needs finishers around the crease and on the power play. DeBrincat remains one of the roster's most dangerous shooters, and replacing that element would be difficult.
The larger takeaway is personal. DeBrincat's commitment to Michigan appears strong enough to survive major changes around him.
A situation that looked ready to produce another Detroit trade story has taken a major turn. Right now, DeBrincat appears much closer to staying than leaving.
