Hunter Shepard's exit gives Martin St-Louis and the Canadiens another goaltending decision before training camp.
Acquired by general manager Kent Hughes from the Ottawa Senators in March, Shepard won't continue with Montreal's organization. He has chosen to join Barys Astana in the KHL.
The move ends a brief stay and removes one candidate from the Laval Rocket's crowded crease. That vacancy could change how Montreal distributes starts across both levels.
Laval still has depth, but Shepard's departure creates room for a younger goaltender to claim meaningful work. That puts Jacob Fowler's immediate path back under the spotlight.
Fowler needs regular starts at this stage of his development. A full workload with the Rocket could offer more value than spending long stretches watching games from Montreal's bench.

Keeping him in Laval would also give the Rocket stability while allowing the Canadiens to monitor his progress without forcing an NHL promotion before he is ready.
Nothing has been confirmed, and training camp will decide the hierarchy. Still, the opening created by Shepard gives management more flexibility than it had before his departure.
Samuel Montembeault faces renewed pressure
The bigger consequence could land on Samuel Montembeault. His role will be examined closely as Montreal sorts through its NHL options and decides how aggressively to push Fowler.
Jakub Dobes also remains part of the equation. If Fowler starts in Laval, Montembeault and Dobes could battle for Montreal's crease while the organization avoids squeezing 3 goaltenders into limited NHL work.
The Rocket can also turn to Kaapo Kähkönen, Hunter Jones, Kevin Mandolese or Francesco Lapenna. Depth isn't the issue. Finding enough starts for every goaltender is.
That competition will shape camp. Every practice, exhibition start and rebound will matter because one strong September could alter the depth chart.
Hughes doesn't need to rush the decision. He can let performance determine who stays in Montreal, who carries Laval and who risks being pushed down the organizational ladder.
Shepard's departure looks minor on the transaction wire, but its impact could reach both creases. Montembeault's security, Dobes' opportunity and Fowler's development are now tied to the opening he left behind.
