St-Louis wasn't there to run up tempo for a July session. He was there to set the standard and make sure those players felt what NHL expectations sound like inside the room.
For a group still trying to earn its way up the ladder, that matters.

That's why two other names jumped out around the rink.
Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov were in attendance for the intrasquad games, and their presence gave the day a little more weight around the stands and the bench area.
It wasn't empty support, either.
When young core pieces show up in July, it sends a message to every prospect trying to crack the next wave of this roster. You're expected to be around it, not just talk about it.
Demidov's timing stood out even more because he had just signed an 8-year contract extension with Montreal on July 1.
Hutson's presence mattered too because he didn't need to be there. The choice to show up told prospects exactly how connected the next Canadiens core already looks.
That doesn't guarantee anything once main camp opens.
But it does tell you the organization is trying to build one voice from top prospects to NHL regulars, and St-Louis is clearly driving that from behind the bench.
Now comes the part that counts.
The speeches, the summer support, and the good optics all help, but training camp will decide who can carry that standard once the battles get real.
