Mitch Marner is still a Toronto story, and Jim Hiller's Maple Leafs just got dragged back into it.
Darren Ferris, Marner's longtime agent, went on The PuckPedia Hockey Show and didn't take the soft route.
He used the appearance to reopen old wounds with the Leafs and hammer the way the organization handled his client.
The sharpest part of Ferris' argument was that the damage didn't start in the 2019 contract fight.
He said it went back to Marner's entry-level deal, when the winger gave up performance bonuses after being told nobody else would get them either.
That didn't last. Ferris pointed to Auston Matthews getting $2.85 million in bonuses and framed it as the moment trust broke inside Marner's camp.
He put it in blunt terms:
“He soon found out that a promise that isn't in the contract isn't a promise, it's a tactic.”
That line tells you exactly where Ferris thinks this story turned.
From there, Ferris tied everything back to the public mess around Marner's next contract. He pushed back on the idea that Marner skipped camp and said the winger got pinned as the face of every playoff failure.

Ferris also said Marner never got cover from the club when the heat ramped up.
His argument was simple: the Leafs let one star wear too much of the blame in a market that never cools off.
He said it outright: “Hockey is a team game. You can't pinpoint one person.” That's still the core of the defense coming from Marner's side.
The Carolina trade chatter came up too, and Ferris gave a very different version from the one that stuck in Toronto. He said the idea was floated at a terrible time, with Marner's wife close to giving birth to their first child.

Ferris also claimed he had already told the Leafs Marner would consider a move to the Western Conference if the club wasn't comfortable waiting on an extension. In his telling, the Leafs were already leaning that way.
Then came Vegas, where Ferris praised Kelly McCrimmon and George McPhee and swatted away tampering talk. He painted that move as clean, direct, and far better handled than anything Marner lived through in Toronto.
That's why this hit hard again. It wasn't just an agent defending a client. It was Marner's camp saying the Leafs never lost the room on this story because, from their side, they never had it in the first place.
