The hockey world is reacting after new details emerged about William Karlsson's injury scare

William Karlsson and John Tortorella just got the update Vegas feared most: the center is not expected back in this Stanley Cup Final.

That is a hard hit this late in June. Tortorella did not fully shut the door, but when a coach says “probably” on a player like this, the bench already knows what it means.

The play that changed it was ugly in a quiet way. Karlsson's last shift came at 8:26 of the second period in Game 5 after Sean Walker drove him into the glass behind Carolina's net.

NHL.com reported Karlsson was favoring his left arm or wrist before heading to the room, and Emily Kaplan later reported he left the arena for more tests.

That is where the “worst case” part lands. Vegas is not losing some extra forward here. It is losing one of the centers that keeps the whole lineup balanced.

Karlsson had 9 points in 14 playoff games before the injury, and that production only tells part of the story.

He also sits on a $5,900,000 cap hit through the end of 2026-27, which tells you the kind of role Vegas built around him long before this Final run.

That trust showed up all spring. He was playing 17:48 a night in the 2025-26 postseason before leaving Game 5 early.

Now Tortorella has to reshuffle the middle against a Carolina team that already has enough pace to stress every matchup. Lose a winger and you can patch around it. Lose a two-way center and the whole bench starts stretching.

That is why this hurts beyond the box score. Vegas can replace shifts. It cannot really replace the way Karlsson settles a line and keeps other players in the slots where they belong.

There is still a sliver of uncertainty because “probably” is not “ruled out.” But this deep in a Final, coaches do not float lines like that unless the player is in real trouble to return.
