Brad Marchand mocks Maple Leafs trade for star Canucks player
Brad Marchand torched a viral Maple Leafs trade pitch on social media this weekend, calling the Elias Pettersson offer "terrible" and adding fuel to a debate Toronto fans cannot stop having.
The proposal floating around had Toronto sending Matthew Knies, the 2026 first overall pick, and a second rounder to Vancouver for Pettersson and a fifth.
Marchand, the 37-year-old Florida winger who put up 27 goals and 54 points in 52 games this year, was not buying it for a second.
The account behind the post billed itself as a Habs meme page. Satire or not, the comment section took it seriously, and so did one of the most plugged-in voices in the league.
Look at the Pettersson on offer here. The Vancouver center finished with 15 goals and 51 points, half the production of his career-best 102-point season three years ago.
He carries a $11.6 million cap hit through 2032. Vancouver finished 32nd overall at 25-49-8, dead last in the NHL with a -100 goal differential.

Why moving Knies would gut a Leafs roster already aging out
Knies just delivered a career year at age 23, posting 23 goals and 43 assists across 79 games. He has emerged as a genuine top-six forward at $7.75 million.
Toronto sat 28th overall at 32-36-14, lost seven straight to close things out, and went 2-7-1 in their last 10. The roster is old. The legs are slow.
Trading the 23-year-old American to Chicago, the team most often linked to him in rumors, would strip the Leafs of one of their few young building blocks under contract.
Toronto already swept the season series with Vancouver this year, including a 5-0 home win in January. The gap between these rosters is not subtle.
Hand Knies away, and that gap closes from the wrong direction. The fresh legs leave. The cap problem stays.
Marchand was laughing at the Pettersson swap. The bigger punchline might be Toronto entertaining any version of a Knies move at all, with the offseason already shaping up as the most consequential one in years.
