The Columbus Blue Jackets opened their training camp as all teams did, last week, but did so without minor league goaltender Cam Johnson.

There was no word on where Johnson was, and the mystery of his absence took another turn on Thursday when the team signed Jean-Francois Berube to a one-year, two-way contract. After practice on Friday, Blue Jackets head coach addressed the media, and finally gave some insight into why Cam Johnson hasn't been at camp.

"He didn't meet the standards fitness-wise," Larsen said. "As soon as I saw that information, we had a talk and I told him he wouldn't be part of camp."

Larsen was then asked if we will see Johnson this season, to which he responded with: "He's pretty far on the outside right now. We just signed (Jean-Francois) Berube. So (Johnson) is in a tough spot."

Johnson, 27, signed with the New Jersey Devils as a free agent back in March 2018 after spending four years at the University of North Dakota. The Troy, Michigan native then signed with the Blue Jackets prior to the 2020-21 season and spent the majority of the year on the team's taxi squad.
