Jalen Smereck has multiple teams interested in signing him
HC Donbass forward Jalen Smereck, who was subject to racial abuse last Sunday, could potentially be leaving his Ukrainian club to sign in the American Hockey League according to TSN's Chris Johnston.
"Jalen Smereck has some options here developing and one of those paths is coming back to North America," Johnston said on Insider Trading. "He is a native of Detroit, he spent the last couple seasons in the American Hockey League and there have been multiple AHL teams that have reached out to his representative to see if there might be a fit and perhaps a home for him back here."
Johnston added, "Smereck did an interview with TSN's Salim Valji on Thursday and he made it very clear. He'll play next week for HD Donbass in their champions hockey league game, but he doesn't see a long-term future for himself in Ukraine. So, as he works through his options, it does appear coming back to North America is among them."
The player who racially abused Smereck, Andrei Deniskin, received a 13 game suspension and a fine for his actions, but many in the hockey world didn't feel like this decision was enough. Among those not happy was Ukraine Hockey League general manager Eugene Kolychev, who was fired for speaking out against racism, and saying that he would appeal to the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine for a tougher punishment.
Smereck, 24, has played in four games this season for HC Donbass where he's recorded four points (1 G, 3 A), and four penalty minutes.
