Peter Budaj returns to Colorado in coaching role

The Colorado Avalanche announced on Friday that former netminder Peter Budaj will return to the organization as a development goaltending coach starting next season.

The 38-year-old was drafted by the Avalanche in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and spent six seasons with the club. In 242 regular season games with Colorado, Budaj had a record of 101-91-27 with a 2.83 G.A.A., a .901 save percentage and nine shutouts.

The Banska Bystrica, Slovakia native also had stops with Montreal, Los Angeles, and Tampa Bay over the course of his career before announcing his retirement from hockey in 2019. He also had several stints in the American Hockey League, one of which, during the 2015-16 season, saw him win the Baz Bastien Memorial Award as goaltender of the year. During that year, Budaj led the league in wins, G.A.A., save percentage, and shutouts.
