The Boston Bruins are working on getting a contract extension done with captain Patrice Bergeron. Bergeron is entering the final year of an eight-year deal he signed back in the summer of 2013.

"Patrice and Kent Hughes, his representative, and I have had discussions about where Patrice is at," Sweeney said. "We'll keep those private as we do all the others and let him decide what path he wants to take. Obviously, it's a completely open door for how long Patrice wants to play the game for us, and we'll leave it at that."

Bergeron, 36, has spent his entire 17-year career with the Boston Bruins after they selected him in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In 1,143 regular season games, Bergeron has 917 points (375 G, 542 A), 440 penalty minutes, and is a +223. The L'Ancienne Lorette, Quebec native was named captain of the Bruins ahead of the 2020-21 season following the departure of Zdeno Chara.

The future Hall of Famer has tons of awards to his name as well including the Stanley Cup, two Olympic gold medals, one World Cup, four Selke Trophies, and others.
