The Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins are quick becoming very fierce rivals, with two meetings over the last two years in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and in their second meeting this season, things got physical. During the Panthers 4-3 victory, AJ Greer hit Bruins superstar David Pastrnak from behind, something that drew the ire of teammate Pavel Zacha.
This wasn't all we saw from both teams however, even if this was one of the most egregious cases of a captain stepping in and taking things way too far for absolutely no reason. Later in the game, Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand went after Nate Schmidt, who was looking to stand up for his teammate, and ended up battering the veteran defenseman on the ice.
However, after the game Marchand was asked more about Greer's hit on Pastrnak, claiming that teams are targeting the Bruins best player, clearly acknowledging that the team need to do a better job of protecting their superstar forward.
Over the past two years, we've seen many big encounters between these teams, and while they usually involve Matthew Tkachuk, it's easy to see that other players are now getting involved, with Marchand or Pastrnak likely to make a statement the next time these teams meet. Unfortunately, the play didn't appear to be too bad on the part of former Bruins forward Greer, but with so much physical play happening between the two teams over the past few years, this won't be the last we hear of it.
