Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin angrily fights teammate Peyton Krebs at practice
The Buffalo Sabres had high expectations headed into this season, but have fallen flat under the leadership of newly minted captain Rasmus Dahlin. Now, Dahlin has targeted and fought teammate Peyton Krebs.
Just three weeks ago, the Buffalo Sabres announced that 2018 first overall pick Rasmus Dahlin would be succeeding Kyle Okposo as team captain. This came after he signed a massive $88 million contract with the team that kicks in this year.
The team released this statement September 26th, which has clearly aged poorly:
«It's been a joy through these opening weeks of training camp to see Lindy experience firsthand what so many of us in our organization have felt when it comes to Rasmus Dahlin's work ethic, competitive drive, and devotion to the Buffalo Sabres.
Rasmus sets the tone for our team each and every day with how he prepares and competes. He is respected by his teammates and coaches, both for his actions at the rink and his commitment to our Western New York community.
We are so proud to have a player and person of Rasmus' caliber wear the 'C' and lead our team into the future.»
- Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams
Now, a mere 18 days after being given the most coveted role in hockey, Dahlin opted to throw a hip check on teammate Peyton Krebs, who was acquired in the blockbuster Eichel trade with the Vegas Golden Knights. Following the hip check, Dahlin began to aggressively punch his teammate:
TSN analyst Carlo Colaiacovo shared his thoughts on the seemingly intentional attack on Peyton Krebs:
That's not a collision. That's Dahlin clearly targeting Krebs with a hit & then instantly getting up to throw bombs. You don't make hits like that on teammates in practice. Dahlin is pissed off about something & took it out on Krebs
While head coach Lindy Ruff tried to minimize the situation, by saying he wouldn't look too much into it, it is clear this is a low point for the organization who have started the season 1-3 with two losses overseas against the New Jersey Devils, one against the LA Kings, and one sole win against an injured Florida Panthers team.
We will see if the Buffalo Sabres can turn the ship around, but if their own captain can't act like a leader, it won't be easy.
