Bruins GM Don Sweeney recently took shows at Ryan Whitney and the Spittin Chiclets' podcast, and now shots were fired right back.
On Wednesday of last week, during the first day of on-ice work at training camp, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney gave an update on Jeremy Swayman. He will indeed not report to camp until his contract situation is resolved. The GM seemed very "disappointed" that Swayman was not in camp but remained hopeful a deal could be struck well ahead of the December 1st RFA deadline.
It got a little hotter when Sweeney addressed some of those rumors that had been going around, particularly from the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, co-hosted by former NHLer Paul Bissonnette. The podcast said the Bruins had been ignoring Swayman's calls during negotiations, which didn't exactly sit well with Sweeney.
Obviously miffed, Sweeney had flatly denied the rumors in the news conference, taking a dig at the podcast by referring to it as the "Spitting Up On Yourself" podcast. Sweeney cleared the air that the reports were false; however, the humor did not click, and some of the people ended up paying more attention to the joke rather than the issue itself.
Of course, the Spittin' Chiclets crew didn't take that all too lightly. Co-host Ryan Whitney fired back at Sweeney, standing by his report that the Bruins had offered Swayman a low-ball deal and had been unresponsive for weeks. The tension between the two sides has only added more drama to the ongoing contract stalemate.
With the Bruins looking to Jeremy Swayman to take the reins after trading Linus Ullmark, it's important for both sides to work out an agreement before the season gets too far afoot. Frustrations from Sweeney are understandable, but it's time to shift the focus from podcast squabbles to finding a deal that works for both the team and the player.
