Edmonton Oilers make surprising decision with Jack Campbell

After spending several months in the AHL, goaltender Jack Campbell has finally returned to the Edmonton Oilers after the team called him up from the minors

After not playing in the NHL since early November of 2023, goaltender Jack Campbell has rejoined the Edmonton Oilers after being called up from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Joining him is former first-round Edmonton draft pick Philip Broberg.

"The Edmonton Oilers announced earlier today that they called up defenseman Philip Broberg and goaltender Jack Campbell."

It is very unlikely that Campbell will get a shot between the pipes for the Edmonton Oilers, unless one of the team's current goaltenders, Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, goes down with injury. That's certainly not out of the question in the Stanley Cup Playoffs as it can be a real grind. Campbell and Broberg were called up to the NHL because the Bakersfield Condors were eliminated from the AHL playoffs, and it's easier to have them travel with the Oilers if their services are needed.

"#AHL The Bakersfield Condors have been eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs 2-0 in their 3-game series with the Reign. The Ontario Reign are currently awaiting their next opponent."

Campbell played 33 games for the Condors this season. After a rough start, he did improve as time went along, finishing with a record of 18-31-1, with a 2.63 goals against average, and a .918 save percentage. He did play one game against the Ontario Reign in the AHL playoffs, letting in 5 goals on 30 shots in a losing effort.

The Edmonton Oilers currently have a 3-1 lead on the LA Kings in their first-round 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs series after managing a 1-0 win in game 4. There is a bit of a break before game 5, as it goes Wednesday night at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
