After a rough 2023-24 campaign, there's a chance that Sean Couturier's NHL career may be on its very last legs.
Over the past few weeks, Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella has benched captain Sean Couturier for several games, and now, things are getting worse for the veteran forward. On Thursday, Flyers GM Danny Briere announced an injury to Couturier that has him listed by the team as day-to-day, confirming he will miss the teams next two games.
Injury update per Flyers GM Daniel Briere:
Sean Couturier has an upper-body injury and is day-to-day. He will not travel with the team and won't be available the next two games.
Fans certainly didn't take it that way however, as they began speculating that this could be a phantom injury that sees him benched for the remainder of the year, potentially ending his Flyers career.
Lately, Tortorella has not been quiet about his frustration involving this team, and while he never called him out by name, it's safe to say that a lot of that is directed at Couturier.
"If a player is going to quit on me, or players or going to quit on me because I'm trying to make them better people and better athletes, you've got the wrong damn coach here, and you've got the wrong damn people here,» Tortorella began.
«My job is, I'm going to push athletes. . . I was in control the other night. What I said I meant. And, quite honestly, when I watch the tape now, I'm more concerned than just the second period. Because of, I'm so proud of the team getting here."
«And I guess now that narrative out there is, because I've heard from other people, is that they're young, they're not supposed to be here bullshit! We're here! We're here; face it!»
Nothing has been confirmed for the future of Couturier, but unless he can turn things around in a hurry and impress in the playoffs, his career in Philadelphia that began over a decade ago is now likely done.
