Shortly after their game Thursday night against the Ottawa Senators, the Calgary Flames announced they were relieving head coach Geoff Ward of his duties and replacing him with Darryl Sutter.

There had been rumors out of Calgary in recent weeks that Ward was on the hot seat, though no one could have expected the news to come just an hour after a big 7-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. The 58-year-old stepped in as their interim head coach last season after the firing of Bill Peters, and after a fairly successful regular season and playoff had the interim tag removed heading into the 2020-21 campaign.

Replacing him is 62-year-old Sutter, who last behind the bench as an NHL head coach during the 2016-17 season when he was with the L.A. Kings. He has also been the head coach of the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, as well as the Flames, who he was previously coached from 2002-06. He was also the general manager of the team from 2003-2010. Sutter has two Stanley Cups to his name, both of which came as the head coach of the Kings. According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Sutter is not an interim replacement. He's signed on for the rest of this season and the next two.
