Some very sad news in the hockey world came out Thursday night, as Wayne Gretzky took to Twitter to confirm the passing of his dad, Walter.

«It's with deep sadness that Janet and I share the news of the passing of my Dad,» said Gretzky in a written statement. «He bravely battled Parkinson's and other health issues these last few years, but he never let it get him down.

«For my sister and my three brothers, Dad was our team captain – he guided, protected and led our family every day, every step of the way. For me, he was the reason I fell in love with the game of hockey. He inspired me to be the best I could be not just in the game of hockey, but in life. We will miss him so much, but know that he's back with our Mom and that brings me and my family peace. He truly was the Great One and the proudest Canadian we know. We love you Dad.»

Over the years that Wayne dominated the NHL, and in many since, Walter has been known by many as Canada's Hockey Dad. He also had one particularly great piece of advice for his son which has since become a very famous quote and helped turn Wayne into the player he was, «Go to where the puck is going, not where it has been.»

Walter was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2012, and as Wayne mentioned continued to battle it until his passing. He was 82 years old. We would like to give our sincerest condolences to Wayne and his family at this time.
