The Montreal Canadiens announced late on Tuesday that goalie coach Stéphane Waite has been relieved of his duties with the team effective immediately.

Waite will reportedly be replaced by former NHL netminder Sean Burke, who will take in the role of director of goaltending for the entire organization, though Burke will not be able to join the team immediately due to a 14-day mandatory quarantine requirement. In the meantime, Marco Marciano (goaltending coach in AHL Laval) will step in on a temporary basis to work with the Habs' goalies.

Though newcomer Jake Allen has performed above expectation in Montreal, Carey Price has played well below the level we are accustomed to seeing him play at, which likely had a lot to do with the change.

Burke, who played 18 NHL seasons, was hired by the Canadiens as a scout back in 2016, but also worked as the team's goaltending consultant, which should make for a smooth transition.

Prior to his time in the Habs organization, Burke worked as a goalie coach and director of player development for the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, with whom he played 5 seasons from 1999-2004.

Perhaps Burke's most impressive achievement as an executive came in 2018 when he was named the general manager of Team Canada for the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Burke assembled a Canadian squad who took home the bronze medal, despite not having any NHL players on the roster.
