According to Vancouver Canucks reporter Patrick Johnston, Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mike Smith is expected to miss «multiple weeks».
It was expected that Smith, 38, would miss some time after it was announced he was unfit to play in Thursday night's game versus the Vancouver Canucks. As a result, Mikko Koskinen was forced to start his second game in as many nights, though it went much better than the first as Edmonton was able to come away with a 5-2 win.
There was much criticism this offseason when general manager Ken Holland elected to re-sign the ageing goaltender to a one-year deal, after his first season in Edmonton in which he mainly struggled, posting a 2.95 goals against average along with a .902 save percentage. Still, given the fact the Oilers have plenty of back to backs coming up due to a condensed schedule, this is bad situation. The only other option the Oilers have right now is 22-year-old Stuart Skinner, who has zero NHL experience to this point.
It's also interesting to note that the Oilers recently put goaltender Anton Forsberg on waivers. He was claimed by Carolina, who put him back on waivers to send to their taxi squad. He was then picked up by Winnipeg.
