According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, plenty of players hit the waiver wire on Friday. LeBrun mentioned that the Anaheim Ducks placed nine players on waivers, while the Colorado Avalanche placed eight, and the Carolina Hurricanes seven.
While some of the players are relatively unknown, a few will likely spark some interest. Three of those players include David Backes (ANA), Jeremy Bracco (CAR), and Nic Petan (TOR).
The biggest name on this list, of course, is forward David Backes. The 36-year-old has had a terrific NHL career, suiting up for 950 games while scoring 245 goals and 557 points. Unfortunately for the once dominant power forward, injuries have taken their toll on him the last few years, making him much less effective than he once was. He played a combined 22 games last season split between the Anaheim Ducks and Boston Bruins, posting a goal and five assists.
Another relatively well-known player who hit the waiver wire Friday is forward Nic Petan. The 25-year-old had a fantastic junior hockey career with the Portland Winterhawks where he posted exceptional numbers during his final three seasons. While he has been able to continue posting great numbers at the AHL level, it has yet to translate to the NHL. In 129 career games split between the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs, he has six goals and 27 points.
Another notable player who hit waivers on Friday is forward Jeremy Bracco. Despite not playing in NHL games to this point, the 23-year-old is well known to Leafs fans due to the big numbers he posted the last three seasons in their farm system. Despite his offensive abilities at the AHL level, he was never called up by the Leafs and opted to sign a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes this offseason.
