A little over ten days since signing a PTO, the Buffalo Sabres announced that they've signed forward Riley Sheahan to a one-year contract worth $700,000.

"We need players to just do things right. We need pros that can lead by example, whether it's in practice or then during games," Sabres coach Ralph Krueger said after practice Thursday. "I knew in the research we did on Riley that number one, he's an excellent character."

"It's important that we want people to treat each other right, but also they need to bring something on the ice because good guys aren't going to help us if they don't execute within a role." Krueger added.

Sheahan, 29, was drafted in the first round, 21st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He's spent parts of nine seasons in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, and Edmonton Oilers.

In 513 regular season games, he's put up 164 points (66 G, 98 A), 83 penalty minutes, and is a -50. In 33 career playoff games, he has 7 points (3 G, 4 A), 10 penalty minutes, and is a -5.

Prior to turning pro, Sheahan spent three seasons at the University of Notre Dame. In 114 games, he recorded 64 points (20 G, 44 A), 74 penalty minutes, and was a -16.

With Zemgus Girgensons out for likely the entire season with a torn hamstring, Sheahan could slot into the third or fourth line.
