Elliotte Friedman has just revealed a major bombshell on Corey Perry's contract termination and his intention to file a grievance with the NHLPA.

Elliotte Friedman Reveals Union May File Grievance Even If Perry Declines

Corey Perry still has some time to decide whether or not he wants to file a grievance with the NHLPA over his contract termination by the Chicago Blackhawks. With so few details shared by the Blackhawks or Perry, its hard to know whether or not he intends to file.

Now, Elliotte Friedman has revealed it may not matter what his intentions are, as there is a strong urge by the Players Union to file a grievance either way in order to prevent this becoming precedent.

I've written before that the NHLPA did not contest Patrik Berglund's contract termination from Buffalo in 2018 because the player wanted no part of it. Don't know what Corey Perry's decision will be, but there definitely is a push for the union to grieve even if Perry declines. I don't know exact details and have no desire to minimize anything, but there are strong feelings the NHLPA cannot allow this precedent.

Perry will be essentially losing out on his 1-year deal worth $4 million. The Players Union clearly feels like the precedent shouldn't be set that teams can do this, however, as Friedman notes, without the details it is hard to make any judgement calls.

Could Be Special Case For No Grievance to be Filed and For Perry Case Not To Count Towards Precedent

There may be a loophole for the Players Union and NHLPA to argue that will keep Perry out of it should he not want to file a grievance, and that would be to carve out the situation from counting towards future precedent, as Friedman notes. However, if the termination was justified, it is hard to believe the League would agree to this as it would want to use this as a precedent moving forward.

Another option would be a one-time «carve-out» that Perry's case/reason for termination will have no bearing on any other situation. (Of course, the league would need to agree.) That has happened before with things like contract timelines during COVID and what is allowed during summer on-ice workouts, but this would be much higher stakes.

Without further details, this whole situation remains just speculative and it is hard to truly understand what Perry or the Blackhawks are dealing with. We will see which path this follows as the deadline for filing approaches.
