The Calgary Flames, in the midst of one of their worst starts to a new season in years, finally pulled off a win last night, beating the Nashville Predators 4-2. While some players seemed visibly happy, Jonathan Huberdeau was caught sitting in the bench fighting back tears. Despite Calgary's win, Huberdeau was benched for the third period as he continued his massive struggle to get anything going.
Huberdeau, who is on year one of an eight year deal that carries a cap hit of $10.5 million, has two goals and four assists in 12 games, and it a minus-12. This isn't his first benching this season, and won't be his last if this play continues. Before the 2023-24 season began, Huberdeau said he was expecting a return to form this season, and indicated the problem last year was now former Flames coach Darryl Sutter. Huberdeau needs to re-evaluate that statement.
