A mock trade scenario is emerging where the Montreal Canadiens would trade the newly-acquired Jeff Petry to their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trade would see a considerable return for both teams.
The deal involves Toronto acquiring Petry, with 50% of his salary retained after Pittsburgh had already retained 25%. This makes him a $2.343M player, offering excellent value for his abilities, even though he's past his prime.
On the other hand, Montreal would receive a third-round pick (originally acquired from NYI for Pierre Engvall), a fifth-round pick, Calle Jarnkrok for balancing the salaries, and the rights to prospect Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, who has left the Leafs for Europe.
Though it's rare for these two rivals to strike a deal, it's not entirely unprecedented. Could history repeat itself, and see the teams once again engage in a trade? Only time will tell.
