The axe has fallen at ESPN, and a Hockey Hall-of-Famer has been given his walking papers. Front Office Sports is reporting that Chris Chelios has been informed his contract as an NHL analyst with ESPN will not be renewed.
Money, Not Performance
The report from FOS cites sources as saying the decision is not based on his performance, but rather restructuring aimed at saving money. Chelios, who is 61, won't be the only big name being let go as ESPN is looking to shed contracts with veterans from various leagues who only work a day or two a week. Front Office Sports is expecting further cuts in the coming weeks.
There From the Beginning
Chelios started with ESPN when the network was awarded broadcasting rights for the NHL in the US in 2021. He's been a fixture in their hockey coverage, bringing a wealth of experience to the ESPN team. The three-time Stanley Cup winner has tons of accolades from his playing career, including three Norris Trophies as the NHL's Top Defenceman, and was named an All-Star 11 times.
