Someone call the burn unit for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wayne Gretzky absolutely obliterated the team live on the air tonight in a segment with Paul Bissonnette.
The Setup
The two are part of the NHL on TNT, which is showing the Florida Panthers - Carolina Hurricanes. Paul Bissonnette, former NHLer turned analyst who had been a very vocal supporter of the Leafs in these playoffs, was explaining that teams that have had success so far roll all four lines.
"You saw some teams that tried to go a little top-heavy, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings here with the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne, but...it can hurt you, Wayne."
Bissonnette was referring to Gretzky supporting the team he's best known for playing with. The Oilers relied heavily of
Connor McDavid and
Leon Draisaitl in both the regular and post season.
The Punchline
Gretzky decided to fire back, giving both Bissonnette and his Leafs a bit of a kick in the shins.
"Yeah, well, why are you taking a run at the Oilers? You've got guys in Toronto on milk cartons."
Gretzky was, of course, referring to key players not showing up when needed most. Both
Auston Matthews and
John Tavares flopped hard against Florida when it comes to offense.
William Nylander and
Mitch Marner had three points each in five games.
