The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday that they've fined Toronto Maple Leafs captain
John Tavares $5,000 for slashing Edmonton Oilers defenceman
Vincent Desharnais.
The incident occurred during early in the third period of Saturday night's game between the two teams in Toronto. Desharnais and Tavares were battling for position in front of the Oilers net, when the Edmonton defenceman cross-checked the Maple Leafs captain several times. As the puck goes out of Edmonton's zone and the pair get untangled, Tavares slashes Desharnais in the hand.
Both players were sent to the penalty box, with Tavares getting two for slashing, while Desharnais sat for two minutes for cross-checking.
