The Vancouver Canucks; re-tool got underway earlier this week when they shipped captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a conditional 2023 first-round pick.
With Horvat now gone, the Canucks are without a captain, who wore the 'C' for for parts of four seasons in Vancouver.
When meeting with the media in South Florida ahead of the NHL All-Star Weekend, Horvat was asked if forward Elias Pettersson could be the next captain of the Vancouver Canucks.
"He'd get my vote." Horvat said according to Sportsnet's Randip Janda.
It seems pretty clear that the Canucks have two options for their next captain, Pettersson and defenceman Quinn Hughes, both of whom would be a very solid selection.
Earlier today, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet said that after the All-Star break, both Hughes and Pettersson will have a letter on their jersey and it's important for them to be apart of the leadership group going forward.
"If we're going to set the bar high here in Vancouver with the Canucks, those two guys have to be involved in the leadership group," Tocchet said. "Every day when they come in, they've got to set the standard, and I'm gonna really lean on those guys."
He added, "Those guys have been in the league three, four years now. They're premier players in the league, and I think it's important that they have a voice and they're part of this leadership group going forward."
