According to Shannon, the NHL will put 10 referees and 10 linesmen in both hub cities, which equals 40 officials total. They will all remain in the same isolation as the players. The reason for those numbers is so that there are enough refs for three games a day, plus standby. He also mentioned that this was the plan for the play-in, as well as rounds one and two, so the system may be changed as the playoffs advance.
This is just one more small detail the NHL committee has had to hammer out as they try to return to play. The league was forced to pause on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the league cancelled the remaining regular season, but is expected to resume playoffs in less than a month's time. Teams will have training camps to get ready for the postseason due to their long layoff, which is expected to begin on July 13.
