Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson will both make their season debuts on Sunday when the Caps host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Backstrom has missed the entire 2022-23 season after undergoing double hip resurfacing this past offseason. His return is remarkable, given that it's rather unprecedented.
Only Ed Jovanovski and Ryan Kesler had similar procedures performed - the former having played just 36 games afterwards, with the latter's career ending as a result.
Wilson, on the other hand, recovered from an ACL tear, which is still a brutal injury but not quite as daunting as a double hip resurfacing.
The Blue Jackets are as fitting an opponent as any, as the NHL's second-worst team by record, after only the Chicago Blackhawks.
