After becoming a free agent this summer following a total nine games in the AHL and Switzerland in 2021-22, long-time Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader is back in hockey.
On Monday, EV Zug who play in Switzerland's top division, National League, announced that they've signed Abdelkader for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.
"We already know Justin and his style of play very well. So we know what to expect from him," says General Manager Reto Klay. "He brings tremendous water displacement and experience. With him, we are also better protected against any further injuries. I'm pleased that he will strengthen us until at least the end of the year."
Abdelkader, 35, had his contract bought out by the Red Wings in October 2020 and then headed overseas to play for EV Zug during the 2020-21 season, recording eight points in nine games.
Along with playing for Grand Rapids (AHL) and HC Lugano (NL) last season, Abdelkader also appeared in one game for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China, putting up one assist in an 8-0 win over the hosts.
