Since the stoppage, the NBA has cancelled the remainder of their 19-20 season, as well as the AHL (American Hockey League.) In addition to the cancellations, the NHL's season has been suspended and the MLB's has yet to begin.
Through the pandemic, the leagues have consistently put forth efforts to resume play in the safest way possible.
With Arizona's newest update, sports fans everywhere may be closer to seeing the return they've been waiting for.
As of Tuesday, May 12th, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has announced that the state will allow the return of professional sports, though without fans in attendance, as early as May 16th, with limited restrictions, per CDC guidelines.
While there have yet to be any confirmed returns set, the MLB has been in discussions with the possibility of hosting all 30 teams in Arizona to play out the season to empty fields, as 15 different teams already have fields set up for spring-training in the state.
The NHL's Arizona Coyotes organization stated they "are aware of Governor Ducey's announcement and will await direction from the NHL.”
The NFL's Arizona Cardinals shared a similar stance, noting they still require a go-ahead from the NFL before resuming team activities at their facilities.
