The Washington Capitals have placed forward Brendan Leipsic on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract, the team announced Friday morning. Leipsic found himself in hot water earlier in the week when messages from an Instagram groupchat he was in were leaked online.

The messages that were leaked contained racist, misogynistic, and other crude remarks, including about current teammates of Leipsic and other players around the NHL. Leipsic released a statement shortly after the messages started being talked about online, but ultimately it wasn't enough to erase the damage that was already done.

Leipsic, a former Nashville Predators draft pick, has spent time with five different NHL organizations over the last five seasons. With the Capitals this season he had played in 61 games, putting up three goals and eleven points. He has played a total of 187 career games, notching 16 goals and 43 assists.
