Among those invited to join The Great One on the call were Jamie Drysdale (D), Quinton Byfield (F), Alexis Lafreniere (F), Jamie Sanderson (D), and Tim Stuetzle (F).
During the call, which was featured as part of the #HockeyAtHome initiative amidst the Coronavirus pandemic that halted the NHL season on March 12th, Drysdale asked Gretzky one particularly interesting question.
What current NHL forwards would Gretzky want on his wings if he were playing today?
When asked, Number 99 mentioned Oilers' Leon Draisaitl, Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby and Maple Leafs Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, though none of the four would make his final line up.
"There's so many good players, that's a tough question.”
And while it's clear that all of Gretzky's honorable mentions are well-deserved, his final decision would make for a line nothing short of elite.
If The Great One were playing today, he says he'd like to share the ice with Oilers' star forward Connor McDavid and one of the greatest goal scorers of the modern day, Capitals' captain Alexander Ovechkin.
"For me, probably Connor because of his speed, he would open up the ice, and Ovechkin because if we get him the puck you know he's going to hit the net or at least have a chance to score, so, those two guys would be fun to play with.”
