Jakub Dobeš heard every chant. He loved every one of them. And after stealing Game 7 in Buffalo on Monday night, the Montreal Canadiens goalie made sure everyone knew it.

"Their fans like to chant my name. That was giving me fire. I like when you're the villain."

That's the rookie who just dragged Martin St-Louis and the Habs into the Eastern Conference Final talking. No filter. No deflection.

The Habs won 3-2 in overtime on the road. Alex Newhook ended it. Montreal takes the series 4-3 and moves on after a Game 6 collapse that looked season-ending.

Remember, the Sabres put eight past the Canadiens at the Bell Centre two nights earlier. An 8-3 home loss in a Game 6. Most teams don't survive that kind of beating.

Most teams don't have a 24-year-old goalie who feeds on hostile rinks either.

Alex Newhook becomes the unlikely Game 7 hero for Martin St-Louis

Newhook has been the surprise of this Habs postseason. Seven goals in 14 playoff games. Four of them in his last five.

Twenty-five regular-season points across 42 games doesn't predict any of that. Bottom-six minutes don't usually produce series-clinching overtime winners. They did Monday.

Nick Suzuki, 13 playoff points in 14 games, is doing captain things. Lane Hutson, 22 years old, has 14 points from the back end this spring after a 78-point rookie regular season.

But the story of this series, fair or not, is the kid in the crease. Dobeš played 43 games in the regular season with a .901 save percentage. He's at .910 across 14 playoff starts now.

He took over for Samuel Montembeault, who finished the year at .873, and never gave the net back. Buffalo got everything they wanted from him as a target. The chants. The narrative. The villain costume.

What they got in return was elimination at home.

That kind of quote travels. It lives on the back wall of every Buffalo bar this summer, and it lands in every Habs fan group chat tonight.

It also raises the next question. The next building won't be neutral either, and the next opponent will have seen exactly how this kid responds when you poke him.

Some goalies wilt under the spotlight. Dobeš seems to grow another inch.
