The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed former NHLer Mikhail Grigorenko to a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. Grigorenko last appeared in the NHL during the 2016-17 season.

This deal appears to be a very safe gamble by the Blue Jackets, as Grigorenko has been very productive over his last two seasons in the KHL. This season saw him post 19 goals and 41 points in 47 games, while last season he put up 17 goals and 52 points in 55 games.

Grigorenko, 25, is a former first-round pick, being selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the 12th pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Unfortunately, he was never able to get comfortable in the NHL with neither the Buffalo Sabres nor the Colorado Avalanche. In 217 career NHL games to date, he has put up just 64 points, including a career high 27 set with the Avalanche during the 2015-16 season.

One thing that was never questioned about Grigorenko was his talent. He has always been extremely skilled, but was never able to put it all together at the NHL level. Perhaps now at 25 and coming off two big seasons in the KHL, he will finally become the player the Sabres had hoped for years ago.
