As most of you have likely heard by now, Edmonton Oilers forward Colby Cave passed away Saturday morning. The 25-year-old was put in a medically induced coma after suffering a brain bleed earlier in the week, and never woke up.

Today, Colby's family arrived back in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, after being with Colby the past few days in Toronto. The family received an extremely warm welcome when they arrived home, as vehicles lined up on the side of the road for 15 kilometers to pay their respects for Colby.

Bob Bartkewich, who has known Colby's dad since they were in kindergarten, helped organize the process.

“Our rec hockey team started this, and from there the community got involved, businesses got involved and as you can see from the cars, it's snowballed. It goes to show how much impact Colby and the Cave family has on this town,” he said.

“It's not just because he was a Battlefords North Star, Swift Current Bronco or back then even with the Providence Bruins – his smile just brought everybody wanting to stand beside him and be with him and his smile was just so infectious. He cared for so many people,” continued Bartewich.

This is a great tribute from North Battleford residents in what was an extremely tragic story. As the days have passed, we have seen many tributes from former and current teammates, media members, and others. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Cave family during this very tough time.
