Blackhawks sign prospect Ian Mitchell to entry-level contract

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenceman Ian Mitchell to an entry-level contract, the team announced Monday morning. Mitchell was selected by the Blackhawks in the second round (57th) in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Mitchell, 21, has spent the last three seasons playing for the University of Denver. This past season was the best of his college career, with 10 goals and 22 assists in 36 games played. He was also named team captain prior to the start of the 2019-20 season. His college career ends with him putting up 89 points in 116 games.

Prior to being drafted by the Blackhawks, Mitchell played two seasons of junior hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Spruce Grove Saints. During his draft year, he scored eight goals and added 29 helpers in 53 games. Internationally, Mitchell represented Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, and contributed with three points in five games.
