After a long NHL and professional hockey career, it appears Andrei Markov may be at the end of it. According to TSN's Andrew Zadarnowski, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv is not expected to offer the 41-year-old an extension on his one-year contract and retirement may be the only option he has.

After leaving the Montreal Canadiens in 2017, Markov signed a two-year contract with Kazan Ak-Bars of the KHL and went on to win the Gagarin Cup with the team. At the beginning of 2019-20, he and his agent tried very hard to get him back in the NHL but he received no offers. Markov was hoping specifically to come back with the Montreal Canadiens but GM Marc Bergevin made it very clear the team was looking to go in a much younger direction. Markov signed on with Lokomotiv for the remainder of the season, recording one goal and seven points in 23 games.

After being drafted in the sixth round in 1998 by Montreal, Markov would play 990 regular season games with the team over 17 years, the entirety of his NHL career. He finished with 119 goals and 572 points, establishing himself as a top-tier blueliner during that time. He has also represented Russia several times at the international level, including at the World Junior Championship, the World Championship (winning gold in 2008) and at the Olympics.

It's always possible that he receives an NHL offer before the beginning of the 2020-21 season but given the fact that he didn't receive one last year it seems highly unlikely.
