Pat Stapleton, known as "Whitey" to his friends and fans, has passed away at the age of 79-years-old. Stapleton spent parts of 10 seasons in the NHL, two with the Boston Bruins and the rest with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Stapleton, a defenseman, finished his NHL career with 43 goals and 337 points in 635 games. He also played five seasons in the now defunct World Hockey Association (WHA), collecting 27 goals and 239 points in 372 games. He is the father of Mike Stapleton who had his own lengthy NHL career, playing 697 games with Chicago, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Phoenix, Atlanta, the New York Islanders and Vancouver.

Originally from Sarnia, Stapleton settled in Strathroy, Ontario following the end of his playing career. He was a member of the advisory board of the Junior B Strathroy Rockets of the Western Ontario Junior Hockey League and has a Strathroy and District Hockey Association award named after him.

In 2005, he was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame as a member of Team Canada in the 1972 Canada - USSR Summit Series. In 2010, he was elected as an inaugural inductee into the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame. Our sincere condolences to the entire Stapleton family.
