The Planet Ice hockey arena in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire is being turned into a temporary mortuary as officials in the U.K. prepare to deal with a spike in the number of cases of COVID-19 and deaths because of it.

"We're working with the owners to ready the rink as a precaution," a Milton Keynes Council spokesperson told the BBC. He added ice rinks could be adapted into mortuaries faster and more effectively than other buildings.

Council leader Peter Marland said the authority was keeping the 2,800 capacity ice rink open to ensure the venue remains at the correct temperature, adding work to convert the rink would take "a matter of days" and the venue could hold bodies "in the hundreds".

"We have been planning for a while around capacity as we picked up quite early that it could be an issue for us," he said.

Planet Ice is home to the Milton Keynes Lightning, a semi-professional ice hockey team playing in the NIHL National League. The team has just joined the league at the beginning of the 2019-20 season after previously playing in the English Premier Ice Hockey League from 2002–2017 and the EIHL from 2017–2019.
