Mets pitcher Syndergaard has torn UCL, will undergo Tommy John surgery
In the middle of baseball's hiatus to break the curve of COVID-19, another star pitcher has revealed a torn UCL requiring Tommy John surgery. Last week it was the Boston Red Sox's Chris Sale, earlier in spring training it was the Yankees Luis Severino and now it is New York Met Noah Syndergaard who will undergo the procedure.
The best case scenario for the 27-year-old to return would be late April. With the realistic belief being around the 15-18 month mark later in summer 2020.
Last season for the Mets, Syndergaard showcased 197.2 innings with a 4.28 ERA and 202 strikeouts. According to ESPN's Sarah Langs, he averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball in 2019. That total was the highest in MLB, min 1,000 fastballs thrown (one of 112 pitchers to do so).
But it was actually his 2nd-lowest average fastball velocity of his career, behind only 2018 (97.4 mph).
This is the second ace the Mets have had undergo the surgery following Matt Harvey's operation in 2013. For Syndergaard, coming off of his surgery he will have roughly four months before he hits free agency for the first time in his career.
Last season, the Mets went 86-76 putting them third place in the NL East, but not good enough for the playoffs.
