Mitch Marner and John Tortorella's Golden Knights are one win from the Stanley Cup Final, but his postgame comments pulled Toronto right back into the story.

It has been almost a full year since Marner chose to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs for Vegas, and the reaction from Leafs fans still hasn't cooled off.

On Sunday night, Marner and the Golden Knights beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final.

That win pushed Vegas to a 3-0 series lead and put the club in full control.

What made it sting even more for Colorado was the way it happened.

Vegas gave up the first 3 goals of the game, all in the opening period, then settled in and flipped the night with 5 unanswered goals.

In a playoff round this deep, that kind of comeback says a lot about a locker room.

Naturally, players were asked after the game how they pulled it off. Marner's answer landed hard, especially back in Toronto.

«I think we have an older group as well that just stays patient and stays calm,» said Marner. «We don't turn on each other, we don't get mad at each other. We know everyone is trying to do their best out there every single shift.»

Toronto fans heard something else with Mitch Marner's recent comments

But in Toronto, plenty of fans took it as a direct shot at his former room.

Auston Matthews and William Nylander were quickly pulled into the conversation, even though Marner never mentioned either player by name.

That's because fans immediately tied the quote to a playoff incident from Marner's time with the Maple Leafs, one that still sits in the memory of a frustrated fan base.

And once that connection was made, social media lit up.

Some fans were convinced Marner was finally saying out loud what many suspected about the Leafs during those playoff runs.

Others saw it as a harmless answer that got stretched because of who said it.

Either way, Marner didn't need to say much to set off a firestorm.

That's what happens when a former star leaves Toronto, reaches this stage with another team, and then delivers a line that sounds just sharp enough to reopen old wounds.
