NHL players working on a proposal to reopen the season during the summer

With the hopes of a resumed season growing ever dimmer, at least in the near future, the NHL players have come together to propose a potential solution that would allow for a 2019-20 Stanley Cup Champion to be crowned.

TSN's Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, Rod Smith and Frank Seravalli sat down to discuss what the players have proposed as a possible scenario on an episode of Insider Trading on Tuesday.

The players have spitballed the idea of having the season to reopen in the summer with a July training camp and then playing enough games to bring everyone team to an equal number of games to decide the playoff matchups. In early August, the playoffs would commence, with the Stanley Cup being decided in late September.

For those who are wondering about the draft and free agent frenzy, the players are proposing to have a 3 to 4-week "transition phase", wherein both the NHL Entry Draft and free agent frenzy would take place, sometime in early October, with a full 82-game season - on a condensed schedule - launching in November.

As it stands, this is not a finalized proposition, but it is believed that the players are working with the NHLPA to develop something to present to the league. It is believed that the NHL is open to discussion any potential options available to resume the season, as it cannot afford to forego the revenue that comes from a full-length playoff schedule.

As hockey fans around the world wait with baited breath for a possible resolution in the form of a vaccine or even a sharp decrease in new cases to help end the COVID-19 pandemic, which would allow the NHL and other leagues to resume play, it's exciting to hear that both the NHLPA and the NHL are open to working on something to allow the 2019-20 season and playoffs to occur.
